Strindberg/Rudolph: Thirsting Spirit (Third Night)
13 Feb 2013
Baritone Brian von Rueden, bass clarinettist Natalie Szabo, and pianist Saori Chiba perform the world premiere of two songs by Chicago composer Elizabeth Rudolph. The text is by Swedish writer August Strindberg, taken from his "Sleepwalking Nights on Wide-Awake Days." Specifically, "Sprawling City" and "Thirsting Spirit" represent episodes from the "Third Night," in which the speaker searches for meaning in community, books, religion - and rejects them all, wandering along his way. The more relaxed character of this piece is coupled with unrest bubbling beneath the surface, depicted in the struggle between the duple- and triple- rhythmic patterns. The video is taken from VOX 3 Collective's "Sleepwalking Nights" concert in October 2012 at the Swedish American Museum in Chicago, featured with several other musical settings of Strindberg's work.
